Species Globorotalia suterae Catalano & Sprovieri 1971

Discussion / Comments:
Iaccarino (1985):
The authors compared this species with the G. crassaformis group as illustrated by Blow (1969), from which it differs in having more chambers in the last whorl (4 1/2 -6 against 4), in the shape of the chambers and in the broadly rounded axial profile. No comparison with the G. scitula plexus to which it appears closer, has been made so far. The two taxa seem close in the arrangement of the chambers. G. suterae may in fact have derived from G. scitula by a gradual increase of its size, the inflation of the chambers and the roundness of the axial periphery. This species, considered here to be related to the G. scitula plexus, is common from within the Late Tortonian to the Early Messinian, predating the salinity crisis.
