Discussion / Comments: |
Iaccarino (1985):
Typical specimens of this species have been recorded only from Messinian sediments in the Mediterranean Basin. Small sizes (maximum diameter 0.20 mm), 6-7 (exceptionally only 5) chambers in the last whorl, weakly convex spiral side, lobate periphery and coarsely perforate testare the diagnostic features. The latter is the most distinctive one because it allows G. multiloba to be separated from other similar forms like G. concinna, G. quinqueloba (which also has the last chambers covering the umbilicus), and from young specimens of Globorotalia humerosa (Catalano & Sprovieri, 1971, pl. 4, fig. 11). Globigerina multiloba recorded by Brönnimann & Resig (1971) from the Oligocene to the Early Miocene in the Pacific is not referable to this species. When correctly interpreted, it is inferred to be restricted to the Mediterranean area.
The distribution of G. multiloba is thought to be dependent on the environmental conditions during the latest Miocene, which could explain its absence outside the Mediterranean, where the sea water mass remained practically unchanged (D'Onofirio et al., 1975). |
