Discussion / Comments: |
Iaccarino (1985):
The morphologic features of this species have been documented in Stainforth et al. (1975) and are here summarized as follows: globular shape, 4-5 chambers in the last whorl, slightly inflated spiral side, radial intercameral sutures, lobate and broadly rounded periphery, large and high arched aperture often with a thin but distinct rim.
Colalongo & Sartoni (1967) suggested that G. bononiensis is to be regarded as a chronologic subspecies of G. puncticulata without explaining which characters have evolved. In their opinion G. bononiensis and G. puncticulata belong to the same evolutionary trend, G. bononiensis representing the immediate descendant of G. puncticulata. In favour of this opinion, some advanced specimens of G. puncticulata show a higher aperture, and a more inflated spiral side. On the other hand the radial intercameral sutures and the rim which borders the high aperture occurring in G. bononiensis appear to be typical of this species only.
Dondi (personal communication) is of the opinion that the two species do not belong to the same lineage and that G. Bononiensis has evolved from the G. opima G.continuosa group. Gradstein (1974) and Zachariasse (1975) do not accept Dondi's view of the origin of G. bononiensis and suggest that the species is indigenous to the Mediterranean Basin. Actually, the species also occurs in the North Atlantic as has recently been recorded by Iaccarino & Salvatorini (1979). Furthermore, some specimens identified as G. puncticulata or G. inflata have probably to be regarded as G. bononiensis (Kennett, 1970; Berggren, 1977a, b).
