Species Globorotalia saphoae Bizon & Bizon 1965

Discussion / Comments:
Iaccarino (1985):
The main features characterizing the species are the pianoconvex shape of the test with the ventral side strongly convex, a thickened peripheral margin which looks like a keel and the fine pustules that cover the test. The ultimate chamber may be reduced in size and its position is elevated in respect to the plane of the spire. Jerkins (in Bizon & Bizon, 1966) related G. saphoae to G. miozea conoidea and G. miozea sphaericomiozea, which belong to the lineage of G. miozea. According to Waiters (in Bizon & Bizon, 1966) G. saphoae differs from G. miozea conoidea in being smaller in size and more hemispherical than conical on the umbilical side, and from G. miozea sphaericomiozea in being more keeled and more circular in equatorial periphery. After examining a population of G. miozea s.l. from an equivalent interval of New Zealand, Bizon & Bizon (1966) affirmed that it is quite impossible to distinguish young specimens of G. miozea from G. saphoae and proposed that the latter can be considered as a subspecies of G. miozea; they named it G. miozea saphoae. However, it is here preferred to maintain G. saphoae as a separate species.
