Species Venus aerea Hupé 1854

Discussion / Comments:
Griffin & Nielsen (2008):
TYPE MATERIAL. There are three syntypes and two fragments in the Typothèque of the Laboratoire de Géologie under number MNHN-Gg2002/57. They are labeled Venus aereana Hupé. REMARKS. This species was neither mentioned nor figured by Frassinetti (1974) in his list of Venus from Chile. The type material belongs in Retrotapes del Río, 1997 (p. 90), a possible junior synonym of Frigichione Fletcher, 1938 [type species Frigichione permagna Fletcher, 1938]. The only available specimens are close to Retrotapes exalbida (Dillwyn, 1817), an extant species living along the coasts of southern South America at present. This species has not been reported from Cretaceous or Paleocene rocks exposed on Quiriquina Island (Wilckens 1904, Stinnesbeck 1986) and the excellent preservation demonstrates that such a provenance is incorrect. Although the published type locality is Quiriquina, Catalogue 8P szates “Arauco” as the locality. If such a mistake were proven and the material did actually come from the Pliocene Tubul Formation of Arauco, then this species would be a synonym of Retrotapes exalbida, a common species az Arauco. This scenario is most likely, and Venus aerea and V. subalbicans have been synonymised with Retrotapes exalbida by Nielsen & Valdovinos (submitted) after revising a large suite of specimens from the Tubul Formation. These authors also provided an extensive synonymy list.
