Species Clavatorella bermudezi Bolli 1957


Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test low trochospiral, equatorial periphery very strongly lobulate; axial periphery broadly rounded; chambers initially spherical to ovate, the later ones becoming radially elongate and club shaped, increasing rapidly in size as added; sutures on spiral side slightly curved to radial, depressed; on umbilical side nearly radial, depressed; surface with uniformly distributed circular to subcircular, subhexagonal funnel-shaped pore pits; umbilicus fairly wide; aperture interiomarginal, extraumbilical-umbilical, an elongate arch bordered by a distinct lip.
Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The type species of Blow's (1965) genus Clavatorella, originally described from Trinidad, was reported as possessing there a very short range, restricted to the Globorotatia fohsi peripheroronda Zone. Blow (1969) very slightly extended it into the uppermost part of the Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone below and to within the earliest part of the Globorotalia fohsi fohsi Zone above. The species has been repeatedly recorded from low latitudes outside Trinidad in the same stratigraphic position.
Quilty (1976):
Remarks: Two distinct forms occur within a population of this species and could perhaps warrant subspecies distinction if some stratigraphic or systematic value could be shown for such a move. The more prominent form consists of specimens with markedly radially elongate chambers with inflated distal extremities. The other, less startling form, has very little radial elongation or distal inflation to its adult chambers. On the contrary, the final chamber is often much reduced, and assumes the appearance of a bulla. It is usually ventrally placed close to an umbilical-extraumbilical aperture.
