Species Globigerinoides altiapertura Bolli 1957


Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test low trochospiral, chambers spherical, increasing rapidly in size as added, three in the umbilical aspect and three and a half in spiral aspect; sutures on both sides depressed and slightly curved; surface with large pores and small spine bases on the pore ridges , hispid on the final chamber. Primary aperture interiomarginal, umbilical, a high, distinct arch bordered by a rim. One supplementary sutural aperture opposite the primary aperture on the last few chambers.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Gs. altiapertura is distinguished by its large, arched primary aperture and almost equal-sized supplementary aperture opposite the primary one. This species gave rise to Gs. obliquus.
Chaisson & Leckie (1993):
Remarks: A narrow definition of this species is employed. Any significant departure from roundness of the primary aperture led to the classification of a specimen as Globigerinoides obliquus. In the morphological transition from G. altiapertura to G. obliquus, lateral oblongation of the aperture seems to precede lateral compression of the chambers. The secondary aperture of G. altiapertura is depicted in some illustrations as being nearly as large as the primary aperture (e.g., Bolli, 1957; Poag, 1972), but such specimens are rare at this site, particularly in the early part of its range. Similar species: This species is distinguished from Globigerinoides obliquus by its more spherical chambers and round primary aperture.
