Species Conoglobigerina caucasica Gorbatchik & Poroshina 1979

Discussion / Comments:
Boudagher-Fadel et al. (1997):
Remarks: The test has at least five chambers in the early whorls, but only four subglobular chambers in the last whorl. The height of the dorsal spire is low, but the dorsal side is clearly convex. The intercameral sutures are distinctly depressed, and form intercameral sutural angles of about 130° at the periphery. The umbilicus is small but open and deep, and the aperture is intraumbilical but (on the paratype figured by Gorbachik and Poroshina, 1979, text-fig. 3c) no broader than the narrow umbilicus; the metatype figured in this chapter, Plate 2.6, Fig. 11, probably like the holotype illustrated in the original publication, unfortunately has sediment covering its umbilicus. The aperture is, however, shown (op.cit., text-fig. 3c) to be conoglobigerine and not globuligerine. This species must be one of the stratigraphically youngest known species of Conoglobigerina, and is noticeable for the lack of height of the dorsal spire (in profile, the test of C. caucasica is very like that of early Favusella). The surface of the test is covered with pseudomuricae which occasionally fuse into very short, discontinuous, blunt ridges (Plate 2.6, Fig. 12). Ultimate elongation of these ridges, and their fusion to form reticulate, favose patterns, will lead to the evolution of the genus Favusella in the following geostratigraphic stage (Hauterivian).
