Species Globigerinopsis aguasayensis Bolli 1962

Discussion / Comments:
Iaccarino (1985):
The main diagnostic feature of this species is the aperture which is arched-interiomarginal, umbilical in the early stage, in the last chambers of adult specimens extending further towards the periphery and the spiral side. The different development of the aperture gives rise to a large variability of morphotypes so that some adult individuals approach the shape of Hastigerina from which G. aguasayensis differs in remaining distinctly trochospiral throughout the various stages. Specimens with the Globigerinopsis type aperture involving only the ultimate chamber occur commonly in the Mediterranean area. G. aguasayensis is not consistently recorded in the Mediterranean. When present, it is mostly represented by specimens referable to the hypotypes figured by Bolli (1962, pl. 1, figs. 5-7). It is here considered a good index species because its range is limited to the Middle Miocene. Its extinction precedes the first appearance of Globigerina nepenthes.
Srinivasan (1975):
Distinguished by spherical to ovate test with interio-marginal, spiro-umbilical aperture. As pointed out by Banner and Blow (1967), the coiling of the test appears to be streptospiral. lndividuals examined from the present area have four or five chambers in the last whorl. Schmid (1967) and Raju (1971) described two new species, Globigerinopsis grilli and G. guhai, respectively, both having dorsal supplementary apertures. Type specimens of Globigerinopsis do not have supplementary apertures, and none of the specimens of G. aguasayensis examined from the present area possesses supplementary apertures. Therefore, forms with a spiro-umbilical aperture in cornbination with supplementary apertures such as described by Schmid (1967) and Raju (1971 ) Warrant a new generic name. SEM examination of the surface ultramicrostructure of G. aguasayensis indicates that it is closely related to Globigerinella.
