Species Globigerinoides sicanus De Stefani 1950

Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test spherical to subspherical, two and one-half to three chambers in the final whorl. In general, test consists of two equal or nearly equal spheres, one consisting of final chamber, the other consisting of the penultimate chamber strongly embracing the earlier ones, sutures distinct and depressed. Surface distinctly cancellate; aperture two to three irregular, narrow, elongate slits at the base of the final chamber.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
This species has been widely recorded as Globigerinoides bisphericusTodd, overlooking the priority of De Stefani's name. Bronnimann and Resig (1971) proposed several new taxa (Globigerinoides pseudoselli, Globigerinoides sicanus praesicanus) for this group of subspherical forms, which are here regarded as variants within Gs. triloba—Gs. sicanus populations. Gs. sicanus developed from Gs. triloba (Reuss) and is the direct ancestor of Praeorbulina and, in turn, Orbulina .
Quilty (1976):
Remarks: The specimens reworked into the late Miocene of Hole 319 include those forms described by Brönnimann and Resig (1969) as G. sicanus praesicanus, and also possibly G. pseudosellii..
