Species Pulleniatina praecursor Banner & Blow 1967



Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test medium, initially trochospiral, later streptospiral, equatorial periphery slightly lobulate, axial periphery broadly rounded, chambers subspherical, about five to six in the final whorl, increasing slowly in size except for the last chamber, which is abruptly more embracing; sutures weak, on spiral side curved, gently depressed; on umbilical side radial, depressed; surface smooth, covered with thick cortex, granular on early chambers facing the aperture; umbilicus covered by last chamber; aperture interiomarginal, extraumbilical-umbilical, a rather medium arch along the base of the final chamber extending up to the periphery of the preceding whorl.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Pu. praecursor represents an intermediate evolutionary stage between Pu. primalis and Pu. obliquiloculata. It is distin- guished from Pu. primalis by its aperture, which extends farther onto the periphery than Pu. primalis.
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
Here are included specimens intermediate between the smaller P. primalis and the larger P. obliquiloculata. From the holotype figures of P. primalis and P. praecursor and the lectotype figures of P. obliquiloculata, P. praecursor is closer to P. primalis. In spiral and umbilical view the two species are difficult to separate. Only in peripheral view does the slightly larger P. praecursor appear higher. Stainforth et al. (1975) consider P. praecursor as a recognizable species but judge it as unimportant as a zonal marker. Parker (1967) includes the species in P. primalis. Very large, comparatively thin shelled specimens with 4, 5, and occasionally even 6 chambers in the last whorl occur in the basal part of the Globorotalia tosaensis Zone of the sections investigated in the Atlantic and Caribbean, at about the level where the genus makes its re entry after an absence during the Middle Pliocene.
