Subspecies Globorotalia truncatulinoides excelsa Sprovieri 1980

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The holotype differs from the neotype of G. truncatulinoides truncatulinoides mainly in its smaller size (0.5 con against 0.78 mm) and by a more strongly elevated umbilical cone. Furthermore, in side view the acute terminal point of each chamber is clearly higher compared with the preceding one and is not bent towards the umbilical funnel. In adult G. truncatulinoides truncatulinoides on the other hand the last 2 to 3 chambers are usually of about equal height around the umbilicus, or the last chamber may even be lower compared with the penultimate. Furthermore, in the subspecies excelsa the peripheral keel is more acute, the umbilicus more open and the granules covering the surface rarer compared with G. truncatulinoides truncatulinoides, particularly in the earlier chamber of the test. Judging from the figure of d'Orbigny, Rotalina truncatulinoides is a typical, delicate, small (0.5 mm), high conical excelsa with the characteristic increase in height of the succeeding last chamber on the umbilical side. The neotype selected by Blow is a considerably larger specimen (0.78 ram) with the last 3 chambers having about the same height on the umbilical side; in lateral view the umbilical cone is not as high and is more distinctly rounded. This is typical for an adult specimen with an already rather thickened wall at least in the early portion of the test.
