Subspecies Globorotalia truncatulinoides truncatulinoides d'Orbigny 1839

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The neotype shows, according to its author Blow, 'a normal wall texture and structure which is not thickened by a sheathlike structure (cf. G. (G.) truncatulinoides pachytheca). The pustules also densely packed over the earlier parts of the test are clearly not fused together and they still show their individuality.' Furthermore, following Blow, the subspecies truncatulinoides when compared with pachytheca possesses 'more laterally compressed chambers in the final whorl, a more widely open umbilicus, a somewhat less tightly coiled test, less embracing chambers and more completely radial dorsal intercameral sutures. Further, the ventral side as a whole and the individual chambers on the ventral side are both more sharply and acutely conical in truncatulinoides (s.s.) than in pachytheca.' These distinguishing criteria, except perhaps for the lastmentioned, are difficult to recognize clearly on the type figures, and in practice it would not be easy to distinguish the two taxa on such criteria alone.
