Subspecies Globorotalia tumida flexuosa Koch 1923

Alternative name:
Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
This subspecies is a variant of G. tumida tumida with an additional chamber or two which become saddle like, strongly bent down or flexed towards the umbilical side. Such forms are not necessarily restricted to certain stratigraphic levels but appear to be controlled rather by particular environmental conditions. G. tumida flexuosa was common in the younger Pleistocene of the Atlantic province, becoming extinct there some 80000 years ago. However, virtually identical forms already occurred much earlier, for example in the Early Pliocene Globorotalia margaritae Zone in well Bodjonegoro I of Java (Bolli, 1966b). More locally, or within a given province, G. tumida flexuosa may serve as a useful index.
