Species Hastigerina pelagica d'Orbigny 1839

Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test large, planispiral, involute, biumbilicate; chambers subglobular to ovate, regularly increasing in size, five to six in the final whorl; sutures depressed, surface smooth with large and more closely arranged pores, large massive triradiate spines irregularly distributed over the surface; aperture interiomarginal, a wide equatorial arch bordered by a thin lip.
Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The species is characterized by its comparatively tightly coiled, nearly involute, planispiral test with chambers of the last whorl distinctly broader than high. Chamber walls are delicate, well preserved specimens having the unmistakable, characteristic, widely spaced trigonal prismatic spines that in living specimens may measure several times the diameter of the test itself. In fossil specimens these spines are mostly broken off or at least preserved as short stumps, particularly on the early chambers of the last whorl (Figs. 43.11-12). Banner & Blow (1960b) regard H. pelagica as being restricted to the Pliocene to Holocene. Blow (1969) extended its range to 'lower part Zone N 16 to Zone N 23' (Late Miocene Globorotalia acostaensis Zone to Holocene). Typical specimens are particularly characteristic in the Pleistocene and Holocene. Careful investigations on well preserved early forms are still needed to prove their morphological relationship with the holotype or lectotype.
