Bolli & Saunders (1985):
Blow (1969), in an attempt 'to recognize the biostratigraphic value of the extreme morphological forms characterized by the holotype of Globigerina calida', restricted Parker's concept of her taxon, gave it subspecies rank and distinguished it from G. calida praecalida, which stratigraphically precedes G. calida calida. Compared with G. calida praecalida, the large sized (up to 0. 8 mm), low trochospiral and loosely coiled G. calida calida is characterized by a tendency towards radial elongation of the later chambers, in particular the final one, and thus approaches the condition seen in Beella. There is a tendency for the chambers forming the last whorl to become more numerous, often numbering 5 or, more rarely, 6. G. calida calida differs from G. bulloides in the radially more elongated chambers resulting in a more lobate equatorial periphery.

Compared with G. calida praecalida, the large sized (up to 0.8 man), low trochospiral and loosely coiled G. calida calida is characterized by a tendency towards radial elongation of the later chambers, in particular the final one, and thus approaches the condition seen in Beella. There is a trend for the chambers forming the last whorl to become more numerous, often numbering 5 or, more rarely, 6. G. calida calida differs from G. bulloides in the radially more elongated chambers resulting in a more lobate equatorial periphery. Forms called G. aff. calida calida with intermediate morphological features between G. calida calida and G. calida praecalida have been observed within the Late Pliocene (Colalongo & Sartoni, 1977, pl. 12, fig. 2). These forms show more globular chambers, more open coiling and a more rapid increase in the size of the last chamber. The typical elongation of the last chamber is absent.
