Bolli & Saunders (1985):
Globorotalia scitula s.l. ranges from Middle Miocene to Recent, an exceptionally long range for a Tertiary Globobotalia species. Blow (1959) separated a forerunner, G. scitula praescitula from the typical form. Brady erected Pulvinulina scitula in 1882 as 'a variety of Pulvinulina canariensis' but did not illustrate it. In his Challenger report of 1884 he reviewed his earlier conclusions and placed this taxon in synonymy with P. patagonica (d’Orbigny). The specimen he illustrated (here reproduced as Fig. 31.3) is apparently 0.6 mm in diameter though his earlier description drew attention to its minute dimensions quoting a diameter of 0.25 mm. Banner & Blow's lectotype from Brady's syntypic series at 0.28 min was presumably chosen to be close to the originally quoted size. Blow (1959) also erected G. scitula gigantea. It differs from the G. scitula scitula lectotype in its distinctly larger size (0.59 mm), but is virtually identical in size with the original specimen figured by Brady. G. scitula scitula differs from G. margaritae in having a more circular outline in equatorial view, in having a higher umbilical side, that is, in being more distinctly biconvex, in the absence of a peripheral keel, in its more robust, thicker chamber walls, and in showing a dextral coiling pattern. |
