Species Sphaeroidinellopsis sphaeroides Lamb 1969

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
This species, described from the Late Pliocene of the Gulf of Mexico, was placed by Stainforth et a]. (1975) in synonymy with S. paenedehiscens. The two species, both having 3 chambers in the final stage, are very close as regards the narrow apertural slits and surface features (cortex). However, the test of S. paenedehiscens is distinctly more elongate, with sutures between chambers indicated by shallow depressions. Based on these features S. paenedehiscens is here placed within the S. seminulina plexus, As the name implies, S. sphaeroides, has a close to spherical shape, with the final chamber much less elongate compared with S. paenedehiscens and depressions between chambers only faintly indicated or virtually nonexistent, as is We case in many Sphaeroidinella specimens. With a test shape very close or identical to Sphaeroidinella dehiscens and with the apertural features of Spharroidinellopsis seminulina (one aperture only), S. sphaeroides is here regarded as a transitional form between these two taxa. Its stratigraphic range is not significantly different from that of S. seminulina, except for a trend to become more typically developed and more frequent in the upper part of the Early Pliocene, i.e. immediately before the first appearance of Sphaeroidinella. The two species are found together until the top of the range of S. sphaeroides in the Late Pliocene
