Species Clavatorella sturanii Giannelli & Salvatorini 1976

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
This species was first listed by Giannelli 2-4; Salvatorini (1975) on a range chart as a nomen nudum under the name Clavatorella pseudobermudezi. In 1976 they described and figured the form which originates from Malta under the new name Globorotalia sturanii. On account of the distinctly elongated last chamber the species is here placed in Clavatorella. The very low trochospiral arrangement of the chambers is the same as in C. bermudezi. It differs from this species in the chambers being less elongate and more inflated compared with the more distinctly clavate ones in C. bermudezi. While in sturanii distinct elongation is restricted to the final chamber, it occurs in bermudezi to a lesser degree also in the penultimate and often in the antepenultimate chamber. The umbilical extraumbilical aperture is in bermudezi a low slit, in sturanii a high, semicircular arch. The largest diameter in sturanii measures 0.42 turn compared with 0.7 mm in the distinctly larger bemudezi. From available data bermudezi is known to be present in low latitudes, sturanii from the Mediterranean area. A more complete geographic distribution pattern for the two species has still to be evaluated. C. sturanii has a considerably longer range within the Miocene. According to its authors it extends from Zone N 8 (Praeorbulina glomerosa Zone) to Zone N 12 (Globorotalia fohsi robusta Zone).
