Species Globigerinoides obliquus Bolli 1957



Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test trochospiral, chambers spherical except the final one, which is compressed in a lateral oblique manner, three to four in the final whorl increasing rapidly in size as added, sutures on spiral side radial to obliquely depressed, on umbilical side radial and depressed, surface distinctly pitted and perforate; primary aperture a distinct, high, and wide arch, interiomarginal, umbilical; secondary sutural aperture on last few chambers opposite the primary aperture.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Gs. obliquus is distinguished by its obliquely oppressed later chamber. It evolved from Gs. altiapertura in Zone N5 (Early Miocene) by development of the last few chambers that are compressed in a lateral and oblique manner.
Chaisson & Pearson (1997):
The morphology of this species is quite variable. It can be large with inflated chambers and a large aperture (Sample 154-925B-29H-5, 65-67 cm) or smaller with compressed chambers that give the test a quadrate appearance (Sample 154-925B-26H-5, 65-67 cm). The abundance of this species gradually declines through the Pliocene as the abundance of Globigerinoides ruber increases until the abundance of these two species become roughly equal at Sample 154-925B-12H-5, 65-67 cm. After this point Gs. obliquus becomes quite small and rare.
Chaisson & Leckie (1993):
Remarks: A broad interpretation of this species concept is employed. Similar species: Globigerinoides obliquus is gradational with G. extremus, but it can be distinquished by its more inflated final chamber. Early forms of G. obliquus differ primarily from G. altiapertura and G. parawoodi in the shape of the primary aperture, G. obliquus being characterized by an asymmetric aperture (i.e., wider than high).
