Species Globorotalia zealandica Hornibrook 1958

Discussion / Comments:
Jenkins (1985):
The only species with which G. zealandica can be confused in the Early Miocene of New Zealand is G. pseudocontinuosa, whose holotype is smaller (0.23 mm as opposed to 0.43 mat). Both have 4 chambers in the final whorl but G. zealandica has a squarer peripheral outline with recurved sutures on the spiral side. G. zealandica is distinguished from its immediate ancestor G. incognita which is smaller (0.36 mm), has a more compact test and is thicker walled. G. zealandica has been recorded in the Early Miocene Globigerinoides trilobus Zone in New Zealand, southeastern Australia (Jenkins, 1960), DSDP Leg 29 (Jenkins, 1975), the English Channel (Jenkins, 1977) and by Poore (1979) in the North Atlantic DSDP Leg 49 Site 408 in zones N 7 and N 8.
Chaisson & Leckie (1993):
Remarks: This is a temperate-zone species that is very rare at this tropical site. Specimens at Site 806 are tiny. Similar species: This species resembles Globorotalia praescitula, but that species generally has four and half rather than just four chambers in the final whorl. The sutures on the spiral side of a G. praescitula are more strongly curved. The chambers on the umbilical side of G. cf. G. zealandica are more inflated than those of G. praescitula. Globorotalia miozea is more sharply vaulted on the umbilical side and has a distinctly angular periphery on the chambers in the final whorl.
