Jenkins (1985):
G. semivera with 5 chambers in the final whorl and a fairly large aperture probably evolved from the 4 chambered G. pseudocontinuosa in the Late Oligocene Globigerina euapertura Zone of New Zealand, and became extinct in the Middle Miocene (Jenkins, 1971). On sites drilled on Leg 29 south of New Zealand, G. semivera has a range of Early Miocene in Site 279, Late Oligocene Early Miocene in Site 282 (Jenkins, 1975) and in the Southeastern Atlantic Leg 40 Site 360 it ranges from Late Oligocene to Early Miocene (Jenkins, 1975). The relationship of G. semivera to the warmer water G. mayeri of Bolli & Saunders (1982) is not understood, but G. semivera has also been identified in the Early Miocene of France and the English Channel (Jenkins, 1966c, 1977). |
