Jenkins (1985):
The small distinctive low trochospiral test (diameter 0.16 mm) of G. gemma can be easily overlooked if the fine fractions of Late Eocene Early Oligocene Globigerina brevis Zone samples are not examined. With 4 1/2-5 chambers in the final whorl and a low arched aperture, it cannot be confused with any other species within its stratigraphic range except possibly for Globanomalina barbadoensis (Blow) which is larger, has 8 chambers in the final whorl and is planispirally coiled. In the Austral region there is no record of the latter species but they occur together in the Southeastern Atlantic at DSDP Leg 40 Site 362 (Tournarkine, 1978). G. gemma has a very short range in the Late Eocene Early Oligocene of New Zealand and was used at DSDP Leg 29 Sites 277 and 282 to identify the Globigerina brevis Zone in absence of the zonal marker (Jenkins, 1975).
