Bolli & Saunders (1985): The species differs from G. scitula scitula in the more inflated chambers, less shiny surface and in the intercameral sutures on the spiral side being nearly radial or only very slightly curved backwards, giving the individual chambers a more globular aspect. The Early Pliocene specimen figured in Stainforth et al. (1975, p. 364, figs. 3-5) as G. juanai has strongly curved oblique sutures and is very close to the holotype figure of G. margaritae primitiva, which is also figured by Stainforth et al. (1975, p. 364, figs. 7a-b). It is placed in G. juanai as these authors consider G. margaritae primitiva to he a junior synonym of that species. A comparison with the holotype of G. juanai clearly shows how it differs from the Early Pliocene G. margaritae specimens illustrated by Stainforth et al. on that page, and included by them in G. juanai. G. juanai shows a very distinct preference for dextral coiling throughout its range (Bermudez & Bolli, 1969, fig. 2), whereas G. margaritae has a sinistral preference. G. juanai is known only from the Late Miocene Globorotalia acostaensis Zone, while G. margaritae is confined to the Early Pliocene Globorotalia margaritae Zone. The dextrally coiling specimen figured in Stainforth et al. (1975, fig. 174) from the Globorotalia acostaensis Zone is a typical G. juanai. Chaisson & Leckie (1993): Similar species: Globorotalia juanai differs from G. cibaoensis in having a subrounded to subacute peripheral margin as opposed to the subangular to acute margin of the latter taxon. G. juanai also tends to be flatter on the dorsal side with inflated chambers on the ventral side. It differs from G. crassula in being less circular in outline and in lacking an angular, keel-like peripheral margin. |
