Species Globigerina (Zeaglobigerina) apertura Cushman 1918

Alternative name:
Globigerina apertura Cushman 1918
Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test low trochospiral, chambers spherical to subspherical, increasing uniformly in size as added, four chambers in the final whorl; sutures distinct, slightly curved, depressed, surface cancellate with distinct pores and pore pits, separated by interpore ridges. Aperture umbilical, very large, semicircular with a distinct apertural rim.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Gg. (Zg.) apertura may be distinguished by its large semicircular aperture and cancellate surface. The distinctive cancellate surface and apertural rim indicates that Gg. (Zg.) apertura is phyletically related to Gg. (Zg.) woodi and cannot be considered as a subspecies of Gg. (Gg.) bulloides as suggested by Blow (1969). There is evidence of close phylogenetic relationships among Gg. (Zg.) apertura, Gg. (Zg.) decoraperta, and Gg. (Zg.) woodi. In the Middle Miocene, Gg. (Zg.) wood; with a very large aperture tends to intergrade with Gg. (Zg.) apertura, while in the Pliocene, Gg. (Zg.) apertura tends to intergrade with Gg. (Zg.) decoraperta. These species have similar surface ultrastructure and consistently have four uniformly increasing chambers in the final whorl. Gg. (Zg.) apertura developed from G. (Zg.) woodi by an expansion of the aperture.
