Species Pulleniatina obliquiloculata Parker & Jones 1865
|
||||||
Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983): Test globose, initially trochospiral, later streptospiral almost involute, axial periphery broadly rounded, four to five broadly rounded chambers in the final whorl; sutures almost flush; surface smooth, granular in apertural areas; umbilicus covered; aperture a low arch, extending from umbilical area to periphery and onto spiral side. |

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985): The type species for Pulleniatina, Pullenia sphaeroides obliquiloculata Parker & Jones (1865), is considered lost. Bolli et al. (1957) designated a lectotype to which Banner & Blow (1967) gave paralectotype status, claiming that the selected specimen is immature and comparable only to the inner whorls of the lectotype they erected at that time. Following the emended species description by Banner & Blow, P. obliquiloculata differs from P. primalis-P. praecursor in an overlap of the oppositely placed chamber on the umbilical end of the last chamber in such a way that they are joined by a distinct straight suture and not by a point as in P. praecursor. In overall test morphology P. obliquiloculata is distinctly higher in peripheral view, and the equatorial periphery less lobate. Spirally the intercameral sutures are less incised and chambers of early whorls less visible. Chaisson & Pearson (1997): The stratigraphic ranges of pulleniatinids are discontinuous in the Atlantic (Bolli and Saunders, 1985) and, moreover, the morphotypes do not have stratigraphic integrity, as they do in the western equatorial Pacific (Chaisson and Leckie, 1993). P. obliquiloculata does not occur in the early Pliocene at Site 925 before the “Atlantic interim”, although its published range (Kennett and Srinivasan, 1983) suggests that it should. Furthermore, the primalis morphotype persists upsection at Site 925 beyond its published LO (Kennett and Srinivasan, 1983; Berggren et al., 1985), as it does in the eastern equatorial Pacific (Chaisson, 1996). Chaisson & Leckie (1993): Remarks: This species is distinguished from earlier pulleniatinids by an aperture that extends from the umbilical to the spiral side on the final chamber enclosing earlier chambers to varying degrees. Pulleniatina finalis is included under the present species concept (cf. Orr and Jenkins, 1980, and Kennett and Srinivasan, 1983). Similar species: See Pulleniatina primalis. |
