Discussion / Comments: | ||||||
Jenkins (1985): G. munda is a small species (holotype 0.22 mm) with 4 chambers in the final whorl and a low lipped, slit aperture. It is distinguished from G. nana which has a larger test (holotype 0.30 mm), a thicker lipped aperture and a non hispid test surface. There is some evidence that G. munda may have evolved from G. gemma, and itself gave rise to the Globigerina juvenilis populations in the Late Oligocene Globigerina euapertura Zone, which eventually evolved into G. glutinata and possibly G. bradyi. G. munda has a short range and has been recorded in the Globigerina angiporoides to lower Globigerina euapertura zones of New Zealand and at DSDP Leg 29 Site 277 (Jenkins, 1971, 1975). |
