Species Globigerinelloides algerianus Cushman & Ten Dam 1948

Boudagher-Fadel et al. (1997):
Remarks: This species is distinguished by its completely planispiral and microperforate test which lacks a keel; by its high number of chambers, ten to twelve in the last formed whorl; and by an equatorial aperture with relict openings in broad umbilici and long portici on both sides of the test. The stratigraphic range of G. algerianus sensu stricto overlaps in the Late Aptian of Tunisia and Kacha River with the older taxon Globigerinoides ferreolensis (Moullade). According to Prof. M. Caron (personal communication, 1995) the only difference between the younger form G. algerianus and the older form G. ferreolensis is the greater number of chambers per whorl in the former. However, the evolution is demonstrated by the consistent, gradual change in the morphological grade from G. ferreolensis (Moullade) into G. algerianus s.s. seen in our Crimean and Tunisian material. Their constant presence in the same samples in Crimea and Tunisia agrees with the coincidence in ranges of the two taxa in the middle part of the Late Aptian (algerianus Zone of Bellier and Chitta, 1981; Caron, 1985; Ben Haj Ali, 1987; and Altiner, 1991). Globigerinelloides arose rapidly from the equally planispiral Blowiella by the addition of more chambers and broader umbilici and longer portici to give rise to G, ferreolensis and algerianus which in turn gave rise to Planomalina cheniourensis (Sigal) (Caron, 1985) and to P. buxtor- (Gandolfi), via Alanlordella, by acquiring a macroperforate test and, progressively, a peripheral keel.
