Discussion / Comments: | ||||||
Iaccarino (1985): G. saheliana is a typical species of the Late Miocene in the Mediterranean area. It first occurs within the Globorotalia suterae Subzone and disappears before the salinity crisis when the environmental conditions drastically changed. The species shows morphologic variabilities especially with regard to the number of chambers in the last whorl (41, to 6) and whether the peripheral margin is acute and weakly keeled or rounded and not keeled (Colalongo et al., 1979b). G. saheliana shows similarities with G. saphoae from which it differs in possessing a less globular test, a less lobate periphery, a thicker wall, less deeply incised sutures on the ventral side and a more vaulted aperture. According to D'Onofrio et al. (1975) this species shows more consistent similarities with G. suterae, and it is here suggested that G. saheliana may have branched off from G. suterae. However, transitional forms have not been documented. |
