Subspecies Globorotalia tosaensis tosaensis Takayanagi & Saito 1962

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The subspecies is regarded by Blow (1969) as intermediate between the thick walled G. crassaformis ronda and G. truncatulinoides pachy theca. It differs from ronda in its more compact and less lobate test and from pachytheca primarily in the absence of an imperforate peripheral keel. At 0.39 mm the holotype is also considerably smaller than the holotype of G. pachytheca which measures 0.58 mm. The subspecies tosaensis differs from the subspecies tenuitheca primarily in its thick, sheathed walls as a result of densely fused pustules. Blow (1969) quotes some smaller differences between the two taxa that in our opinion may fall largely within the variability of each taxon and be difficult to use as distinguishing criteria. They include a sharper curvature and less deep incision of the spiral intercameral sutures in tosaensis compared with tenuitheca, and a spiral peripheral margin in tenuitheca which is usually subacute against more broadly rounded in tosaensis.
