Griffin & Nielsen (2008): TYPE MATERIAL. The type material of this species could not be located in the Collections at the MNHN in Paris. It is presumably lost. REMARKS. This species is known only from the holotype, which is an internal mould. Although it is lost, the figure provided by d’Orbigny (1842, pl. 14, fig. 19, 20) is enough to assess that it is an unidentifiable species and thus a nomen dubium. According to Philippi (1887, p 126) this species does not belong in Mactra but in Venus. Therefore, as the specific name auca was preoccupied by d’Orbigny himself, he introduced a new name for it, i.e., Venus controversa. |
