Species Cytherea sulculosa Sowerby 1846

Griffin & Nielsen (2008):
TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype: NHM-L27964 (Chiloé). REMARKS. Sowerby noted also “islands of Huafo and Ypun?” (note that the names Huafo and Ypun are spelled Guafo and Ipún now). Most sediments of Chiloé and Ipún are of Miocene to early Pliocene age (Finger et al. 2007, Frassinetti 2004) while on Guafo only Pliocene deposits are known (Frassinetti 1997, 2000). This is a coarsely costate venerid, but the hinge and part of the margin are embedded in hard matrix. It possibly belongs in Tawera Marwick, 1927 [type species Venus spissa Deshayes, 1835] and probably is a senior synonym of Venus gayi Hupé. However, the correct generic placement remains uncertain and needs confirmation.
