Quilty (1976): Remarks: Bandy et al. (1967) used this as the type species for their genus Neogloboquadrina. While they noted that there is no Phylogenetic link with Globoquadrina, they unfortunately implied a relationship with the name they chose. The important point of their paper is that the species referred to Neogloboquadrina are derived from a globorotaline ancestor, not globigerine. Thus, although the name Neogloboquadrina has not won general acceptance, they showed quite convincingly that this species should not be referred to Globigerina. As a consequence, this species is here placed in Globorotalia, a usage employed by Jenkins and Orr (1972). Perhaps eventually Neogloboquadrina will be useful as a subgenus within Globorotalia. Bandy et al. (1967) differentiated two subspecies on the basis of the presence or absence of globoquadrina teeth or apertural flaps. Their distinction is followed here. |
