Species Pecten darwinianus d'Orbigny 1842

Discussion / Comments:
Griffin & Nielsen (2008):
TYPE MATERIAL. There is one specimen in the d’Orbigny Collection at the Laboratoire de Paléontologie under Catalogue Falunien B number 11115 labelled as “Pecten Darwinianus”. However, this specimen is not the one mentioned by d’Orbigny in the text, which is a fragment according to him. The specimen in the collection is an almost complete valve of Zygochlamys actinodes (Sowerby). A thorough search in the collection of the Laboratoire de Paléontolgie and the Laboratoire de Geologie at the MNHN yielded no results. The only fragment, i.e., the holotype, seems to be lost. REMARKS. This is not a nomen nudum, as the holotype existed and had a description – albeit brief – and differentiating remarks in the original text by d’Orbigny. A neotype would be required in order to fix the name and avoid confusion with Amusium paris del Río (1992, p. 23-24, pl. 2, figs 3-4; pl. 3, figs 1-2), which was described from rocks of similar age exposed on Valdés Peninsula (Puerto Madryn Formation) and also referred to the late Miocene. However, such an action should wait until additional material from Paraná is collected and properly described.
