Species Terebra costellata Sowerby 1846

Sowerby (1846):
Terebra testâ turritâ, laeviusculâ; anfractibus medio tumidiusculis, posticè linea impressâ obsoletâ notatis; costellis numerosis longitudinalibus, elevatis; aperturâ columellâque laevibus.
Discussion / Comments:
Nielsen (2003):
Das Gehäuse ist relativ klein. Der Protoconch ist unbekannt. Die Teleoconchwindungen sind subsutural eingeschnürt und bilden eine kurze subsuturale Rampe. Die Skulptur besteht aus etwa 24 gebogenen axialen Rippen pro Windung, dazwischen ist feine Anwachsstreifung zu erkennen. Der Siphonalkanal ist mäßig lang und offen. Die Kolumella ist glatt und trägt keine Falte. Die Fasziole ist kräftig entwickelt. Diese Art scheint der rezenten Terebra dislocata (Say, 1822) aus Brasilien ähnlich zu sein, wie aus der Abbildung bei Simone (1998) zu schließen ist, diese hat jedoch eine wesentlich kräftiger ausgeprägte Skulptur. Einige Exemplare der heute im südlichen Südamerika vorkommenden T. gemmulata Kiener, 1839 (= T. patagonica d’Orbigny, 1839) können rela-tiv schwach ausgeprägte Skulptur haben (Bratcher & Cernohorsky 1987) und sind dann T. costellata recht ähnlich. Philippi (1887) nannte drei Fragmente, doch ist in seiner Sammlung nur ein Fragment, beschriftet als Cerithium pyrgiscus, zu finden.

TYPE MATERIAL. Holotype: NHM-G26343, a fragment. REMARKS. This species resembles small species of Zeacuminia Finlay, 1930 [type species Zeacuminia tahuia Finlay, 1930] from New Zealand, with a weak subsutural groove (at c. four-fifths whorl height on spire) and quite prominent, narrow axial costae below that; the aperture of the holotype is incomplete, and the spire apex missing but we have collected complete specimens from Navidad.
