Subspecies Globorotalia crassaformis crassaformis Galloway & Wissler 1927

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The subspecies is characterized by a highly vaulted form with conically shaped umbilical side. The peripheral margin may vary from subacute to acute, or, in low latitude specimens, show a trace of an imperforate rim. The other non carinate taxa of the plexus are either less highly vaulted umbilically or possess distinctly rounded peripheral margins with more inflated umbilical sides as in G. ronda, G. oceanica and G. hessi. G. crassula Cushman & Stewart (Fig. 36.2) belongs to the crassaformis complex based on the original description. Blow's (1969) refigured holotype of G. crassula shows a peripheral keel, which makes its close relationship to G. crassaformis doubtful. According to the same author the holotype is strongly recrystallized and somewhat abraded. He regards it as an intermediate between G. conomiozea and G. viola but morphologically closer to G. viola. Its poor preservation and the fact that it appears more tightly coiled than is typical for the crassaformis plexus leaves its relationship in doubt.
