Species Menuites fresvillensis Seunes 1890

Diagnosis / Definition:
FATMI & Kennedy (1999):
Description-GSP 1052 (Fig. 5.6, 5.7): incomplete phragmocone 137 mm in diameter has U = 19.7 (Table 5), small, moderately deep, with convex, undercut wall and broadly rounded umbilical shoulder. Coiling involute, with 70 percent of previous whorl covered. Whorl section compressed, with whorl breadth to height ratio 0.82; greatest whorl breadth below midflank. Inner flanks feebly convex, outer flanks flattened, convergent, ventrolateral shoulders and venter broadly rounded. To a diameter of 100 mm, primary ribs arise on umbilical wall and strengthen into small bullae, perched on umbilical shoulder; some bullae, at smallest diameter visible, are flat-topped spine bases. Bullae give rise to one or two narrow, straight prorsiradiate ribs, separated by one or two intercalated ribs that arise high or low on flank. All ribs strengthen markedly on outer flank, sweep forwards and cross venter in broad convexity. Bullae efface progressively; very weak beyond 100 mm; inner flank ribs efface to give near-smooth inner to mid-flanks at greatest diameter preserved, where ventrolateral and ventral ribs are only conspicuous ornament. Sutures not seen. Types. -Lectotype, by the subsequent designation of Kennedy, 1986, p. 44, is the original of Seunes, 1890, plate 2(l), no. Al 1186 in the collections of the Ecole des Mines, Paris, now housed in the Universite Claude-Bernard, Lyon, and from the Upper Maastrichtian Calcaire @ Baculites of Fresville, Manche, France.
Discussion / Comments:
FATMI & Kennedy (1999):
Discussion.-Menuites fresvillensis is extensively reviewed and discussed by Henderson and McNamara (1985), Kennedy (1986), Ward and Kennedy (1993) and Kennedy and Hancock (1993). The present specimen is altogether typical, if a little more compressed than the lectotype, which has Wb:Wh = 0.94 versus 0.82.
