Species Pleurotoma echinulata Hupé 1854

Discussion / Comments:
Griffin & Nielsen (2008):
TYPE MATERIAL. The holotype of Fusus turbinelloides is specimen NHM-G26398. The holotype of Fusus echinulatus is housed in the Typothèque of the Laboratoire de Géologie under number MNHN-Gg2002/69 (Topocalma). REMARKS. This is a fairly typical, short-spired, coarsely sculptured Austrotoma. Austrotoma echinulata is similar to Austrotoma echinata Powell, 1942 but has a much stronger upper row of tubercles. As the work of Reeve (1846) was published in April and Darwin’s (1846) – including the appendix by Sowerby – only in September, the next available name for this species is Fusus echinulatus Hupé, 1854, which is clearly a synonym.
