Species Hantkenina nuttalli Toumarkine 1981

Discussion / Comments:
Toumarkine & Luterbacher (1985):
Hantkenina nuttalli, the earliest representative of the genus Hantkenina, differs from the other species of the genus by its large size (0.5 to 1.0 mm) and the stellate shape of the test. The chambers (4 to 5) of the last whorl increase rapidly in size and are well separated from each other and radially elongate. Hantkenina mexicana Cushman is very close to H. nuttalli, but it is generally smaller and has longer spines. The general shape of the test is not as stellate as in H. nuttalli and the chambers become slightly imbricated. H. lehneri Cushman & Jarvis (Fig. 23.7) has more (5 to 7) chambers in the last whorl and these are more cylindrically finger-shaped. Nuttall (1930) described a variety of H. mexicana, H. mexicana var. aragonensis, but he illustrated three specimens without designating a holotype. Thalmann (1942b) raised the variety to specific rank and designated the specimen figured by Nuttall on pi. 24, fig. 1 as lectotype. Bolli et al. (1957) erroneously re-illustrated the specimen of fig. 3 of Nuttall (1930) instead of the one of his fig. 1 as the lectotype of H. aragonensis. Ramsay (1962) noticed this mistake and remarked that the real lectotype of H. aragonensis (pi. 24, fig. 1 of Nuttall, 1930) is very close to the holotype of H. mexicana. He, therefore, placed H. aragonensis into the synonymy of H. mexicana. His conclusions were also followed by Blow (1979). Toumarkine (1981) has come partly to the same conclusions: the holotype of H. aragonensis is a junior synonym of H. mexicana, but the paratype re-illustrated by Bolli et al. (1957, pi. 2, figs. 3a-b = Nuttall, 1930, pi. 24, fig. 3) is considered as a separate taxon which she names H. nuttalli.
