Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The lectotype selected, described and figured by Banner & Blow (1960a) displays characters of both, G. ruber and G. obliquus extremus. Identical with ruber is the high arched primary aperture positioned symmetrically above the sutures between the two earlier chambers. As in extremus the final chamber is laterally distinctly depressed in an asymmetrical way If attention is paid only to the shape of the last chamber but not to the position of the primary aperture, elongatus and extremus may readily be mistaken for each other. Whereas in low latitudes the index species G. obliquus extremus becomes extinct in the late Middle Pliocene, G. elongatus ranges throughout the Pliocene to Holocene. It is therefore particularly in the Late Pliocene and Holocene where misidentification of G. elongatus as G obliquus extremus may lead to erroneous stratigraphic conclusions.
