Jenkins (1985): The distinguishing features of G. miozea are a thick walled and relatively narrow biconvex test, 5 chambers in the final whorl with strongly curved sutures on the spiral side and a low arched aperture. I believe G. miozea to have evolved from G. praescitula in the upper part of the Early Miocene by acquisition of a keel and a larger test; in New Zealand it ranges into the Middle Miocene (Jenkins, 1971). Ina shallow water continental shelf deposit of the same age of southeastern Australia, G. miozea is not present and has been considered to be a deeperwater thick walled ecophenotype of G. miotumida (Jenkins, 1975). G. miozea is common at DSDP Leg 29 Site 279 and also present at Site 281, while on Leg 40 Sites 360 and 362 it ranged into the Early Pliocene (Jenkins, 1975, 1978c). Chaisson & Leckie (1993): Remarks: Like Globorotalia cf. G. zealandica, very rare specimens of this temperate-latitude species occur in Hole 806B and, again like G. cf. G. zealandica, they are much smaller than typical temperate zone specimens. Similar species: See Globorotalia zealandica for comparison with that species. The angular, nearly keeled margin and highly vaulted umbilical side of G. cf. G. miozea distinguish it from G. praescitula. G. conoidea has a keel and raised sutures on its spiral side (Kennett and Srinivasan, 1983). The latter taxon was not observed in Hole 806B. |
