Species Globorotalia margaritae Bolli & Bermudez 1965

Alternative name: | ||||||
Diagnosis / Definition:
Bolli & Saunders (1985): When Bolli & Bermudez (1965) erected Globorotalia margaritae from the Los Hernandez beds on Margarita Island (Venezuela) they assigned to it a Late Miocene age, based on mollusc evidence from the age equivalent Cubagua Formation of Eastern Venezuela. This assignment came under discussion during the sessions of the Mediterranean Neogene Congress held in Bologna in 1967. Based on evidence from a number of Italian sections where the species is also present but up to that time had been reported as Globorotalia hirsuta, it was agreed that the range of G. margaritae is, in fact, restricted to the Early Pliocene. Subsequently this view has widely been accepted with few exceptions, where the opinion is that the earliest margaritae appear already in the uppermost Miocene. For practical reasons, placing the Miocene Pliocene boundary at the first appearance of the geographically widespread G. margaritae seems practical. Further information on the stratigraphic significance of Globorotalia margaritae and its subspecies can be found in Cita (1973), Stainforth et al. (1975) and Bolli & Bermudez (1978). |

Discussion / Comments:
Chaisson & Leckie (1993): Remarks: A strict species concept was applied to Globorotalia margaritae in Hole 806B. It is a useful lower Pliocene marker species. Its FO is between the FO of G. tumida and the LO of Globoquadrina dehiscens in the basal Pliocene of Hole 806B. Its LO is slightly below the FO of Globorotalia tosaensis at the Zone N19-N20/N21 boundary. Similar species: G. margaritae differs from G. cibaoensis, G. crassula, and G. juanai in being concavo-convex and having an angular margin with a thin keel. |
