Species Pulleniatina spectabilis Parker 1965


Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Text planoconvex except for the slightly protruding initial coil; low to medium trochospiral, later becoming streptospiral; equatorial periphery lobulate, axial periphery subacute to angled, producing pseudocarinate periphery; chambers five to six in the final whorl; sutures flush on umbilical side, on spiral side slightly curved, nearly flush; surface smooth, polished, granular on early chambers directly facing the aperture; aperture a medium to low arch, extraumbilical, without a lip or rim.

Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Pu. spectabilis is distinguished from other species of Pulleniatina by its almost planoconvex test and broad pseudocarina. This short-ranging
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
The species is a further development and final evolutionary stage of P. praespectabilis with a periphery that varies from distinctly rounded but pinched to quite sharply angular. The high trochospiral early stage of P. praespectabilis is less elevated again in P. spectabilis. The species appears at about the same time as do the first Sphaeroidinella, i.e. within the Globorotalia margaritae evoluta Zone, to become extinct again around the top of the same zone after only a short time interval.

Remarks: The sensu stricto form of this species has a flange around the edge of the chambers in the final whorl. This feature is most pronounced on the final chamber. The test is nearly planoconvex. Similar species: See Pulleniatina praespectabilis.
