Species Globigerinoides fistulosus Schubert 1910

Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test large, trochospiral, three to four chambers in the final whorl; chambers spherical initially, later becoming compressed and radially elongate with multiple, slender, digitate extensions; sutures distinct, depressed; surface densely perforate; primary aperture interiomarginal, umbilical, a wide arch with a rim; supplementary apertures over sutures of earlier chambers.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
This species evolved from Gs. sacculifer by developing multiple digitate extensions on last few chambers in the final whorl.
Chaisson & Pearson (1997):
Gs. fistulosus develops from Gs. sacculifer by adding multiple "final" sac-like chambers. Below the FO of sensu stricto forms of Gs. fistulosus, Gs. sacculifer with increasingly ornamented final chambers are observed. Above the LO the morphological transition in the reverse sense is observed. The downward extension of the stratigraphic range of Gs. fistulosus in Hole 925B may be due in part to our inclusion of less elaborate morphologies in the species definition.
Chaisson & Leckie (1993):
Remarks: The LO of Globigerinoides fistulosus approximates the Pliocene/ Pleistocene boundary at 1.6 Ma (Berggren et al., 1985b). Specimens of Globigerinoides sacculifer preceding the FO ofGlobigerinoides fistulosus s.s. begin to show signs of finger-like projections on and flattening of the final chamber. These specimens have been designated G. fistulosus s.l., and their presence is indicated on the range chart by queries.
