Species Globigerinoides subquadratus Brönnimann 1954

Diagnosis / Definition:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Test subquadrate, trochospiral, chambers spherical to subspherical, three in the last whorl, increasing moderately in size as added; sutures on spiral side slightly curved, depressed, on umbilical side radial and depressed; surface distinctly perforate, with spine bases visible on the interpore ridges; primary aperture interiomarginal, umbilical with a high arch bordered by a distinct rim; two prominent supplementary apertures over sutures of earlier chambers.
Discussion / Comments:
Kennett & Srinivasan (1983):
Gs. subquadratus differs from Gs. ruber in being subquadrate and in having four chambers in the penultimate whorl instead of three to three and a half. This species evolved from Globigerina (Zeaglobigerina) brazieri in the Early Miocene warm subtropical in South Pacific by developing sutural supplementary apertures.
Srinivasan (1975):
This species differs from Globigerinoides ruber (d'orbigny) in having four chambers in the penultimate whorl instead of three to three and a half.
Chaisson & Leckie (1993):
Remarks: This is a homeomorph of Globigerinoides ruber, clearly separated from it in Hole 806B. It has a distinct rim around the primary aperture, a feature that is less robust in G. ruber.
Quilty (1976):
Remarks: In the interval N8-early N9, some small specimens of this species may be included with G. diminutus and the converse may also hold. One of the figured specimens is aberrant in having well-developed lips to the multiple apertures, thus mimicing Globigerapsis.
