Species Globorotalia acrostoma Wezel 1966

Alternative name:
Globorotalia (Jenkinsella) acrostoma Wezel 1966
Discussion / Comments:
Iaccarino (1985):
This species is poorly known in the literature and since it shows a restricted distribution within the Mediterranean Early Miocene a more detailed description of its features appears here justified. It is characterized by a subcircular equatorial Profile, distinctly lobate periphery, a rounded axial profile, a convex ventral side and a generally flattened spiral side. The test is a narrow troehospire formed by subglobular to ovoid moderately appressed chambers separated on the spiral side by curved sutures. The aperture extending from the narrow umbilicus to the peripheral margin is a high vaulted arch developed perpendicular to the coiling direction. "Me apertural face is generally flattened, large and slightly concave. The range of the maximum diameter for the taxon is 0.23-0.36 mm. G. acrostoma shows relationships with G. mayeri as illustrated by Cushman & Ellisor (1939). It differs from the holotype of this species in possessing fewer (4 1/2 -5 against 6) less elongated chambers in the last whorl, a higher aperture, a flattened and large apertural face and a smaller test size. With G. siakensis, G. acrostoma has in common the rounded axial profile and the number of chambers in the last whorl, but differs in possessing curved instead of radial intercameral sutures on the spiral side. Moreover, G. siakensis possesses a distinct open, deep umbilicus, a fairly low elongated arched aperture always with an apertural lip. It is not uncommon however, to find specimens of G. siakensis with an apertural face similar to that of G. acrostoma. Minor analogies exist between G. acrostoma and G. continuosa in that G. acrostoma differs in the higher and more transverse aperture, in the absence of the apertural lip, in having 4 1/2 -5 against 4 chambers in the last whorl and in the more inflated final chamber and greater test size. G. acrostoma is mainly recorded from the Mediterranean area and has only recently been found in the Atlantic (Iaccarino & Salvatorini, 1979; Salvatorini & Cita, 1979).
