Species Leupoldina protuberans Bolli 1957

Discussion / Comments:
Boudagher-Fadel et al. (1997):
Remarks: This form consists of four to five chambers in the last whorl, each elongated with a subglobular extension. These extensions are mostly broken. In the adult the last whorl will remain planispiral but the last few chambers may become biserial or triserial. In the original publication (Bolli, 1957), L. protuberans was (otherwise beautifully) drawn (by L. Isharn) with macroperforations; this is an example of the artist drawing what he presumed to exist, even though he has not seen it. L. protuberans, like all other species of Leupoldina, is a smooth microperforate member of the Schackoinidae. The various forms of preservation of the adult test have given rise to the plethora of junior synonyms listed above. Breakage of the bulbous terminations of the tubulospines (which is the main criterion for differentiation between Leupoldina and Schackoina) often makes precise identification somewhat difficult.
