Discussion / Comments: | ||||||
Bolli & Saunders (1985): With the base of the Pliocene begin to appear low, medium and high spired forms of considerable size range, with 4-7 chambers in the last whorl, with apertures restricted mainly to an umbilical position. Such forms may also possess umbilical tooth like flaps. Bandy et at. (1967) subdivide N. dutertrei into the subspecies dutertrei with tooth like apertural flaps and subcretacea (Lomnicki) (=subspecies blowi, see Rögl & Bolli, 1973, p. 570) without these features. On fig. 1, p. 154, they demonstrate that the subspecies dutertrei developed from the subspecies 'subcretacea' in the Late Pliocene and remained restricted to tropical latitudes through to the present day thus constituting a good environmental indicator. Contrary to other authors, Bandy et at believe that the subspecies 'subcretacea' developed in Late Miocene from Globorotalia globorotaloidea (Colom). In the Mediterranean area medium spired forms, commonly with 5 chambers in the last whorl and an umbilicalextraumbilical aperture bordered by a thick lip, occur in the latest Miocene. They are included in N. dutertrei even though the distinguishing features (tooth like flaps and umbilical position of aperture) of the genus are not present. |
