Subspecies Globorotalia fohsi praefohsi Blow & Banner 1966

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
Blow & Banner erected praefohsi as a morphologically intermediate form between peripheroacuta and fohsi. The last two chambers of the fairly large holotype are already of the elongate cockscomb shape, typical for lobata. Based on these features one would rather regard the holotype as a typically transitional form between the subspecies fohsi and lobata and not as intermediate between peripheroacuta and fohsi. Such a stratigraphically younger position is confirmed by the Globorotalia fohsi lobata Zone age of the Venezuelan sample from which the praefohsi holotype originates. In addition to the holotype, Blow & Banner also figure a paratype which they selected from a Sumatra sample and whose morphological features fit well between those of the subspecies peripheroacuta and fohsi. Had Blow & Banner made the Sumatra paratype the holotype of their subspecies, its name praefohsi would have been better justified as an intermediate between the subspecies peripheroacuta and fohsi. Instead, it now represents a transition between the subspecies fohsi. and lobata.
