Subspecies Globorotalia menardii menardii Parker et al. 1865

Discussion / Comments:
Bolli & Saunders (1985):
Our investigations, mainly in the tropical Caribbean/Atlantic province, have led to the distinction on the QuaternaryHolocene of two G. menardii types, a robust, thick walled form, fairly circular in equatorial outline and with a thick peripheral keel, and a more delicate, thinner walled form, with a less marked peripheral keel and a more elongate outline in equatorial view. When comparing these two types with Banner & Blow (1960a) the robust form fits well with their lectotype of G. menardii menardii and the delicate, more elongate form with their neotype of G. menardii cultrata. Such a distinction was successfully followed by Bolli (1970) in the Caribbean DSDP sites and specimens figured by him. A comparison of the Pleistocene to Holocene G. menardii with forms from the Middle Miocene showed the latter on the average to be smaller in test size and with a somewhat slower increase in chamber size. As is the case for the Pleistocene to Holocene, two groups of specimens, a more robust and a more delicate one, can also be distinguished in the Middle Miocene. To distinguish the Middle Miocene forms from the Pleistocene Holocene ones the older ones were designated as G. menardii 'A' by Bolli as discussed above.
